Optim-Eyes™ Vision Support contains Vitamin C
Vitamin C, when taken as ascorbic acid, has been shown to reduce intraocular ("within the eye") pressure,19,21,25,29 which is useful in cases of glaucoma. Though the required dosage can vary greatly from person to person, consistent supplementation has been shown to be a key element to its effectiveness.
Optim-Eyes™ Vision Support contains Vitamin E
Vitamin E is simply one of the best antioxidants a person can take. Vitamin E is important because lack of blood (and consequently oxygen) flow to the macula AND free radical damage to the macula seem to be the primary contributors to macular degeneration. Vitamin E neutralizes free radicals. Optim-Eyes™ contains natural (not synthetic) Vitamin E, as mixed tocopherols. Keep reading for the ingredients that address the other factor, lack of blood flow.
Optim-Eyes™ Vision Support contains Lutein & Zeaxanthin
Lutein & zeaxanthin are the two carotenoids found in the retina. They are carotenoids of the xanthophyll group (oxygenated carotenoids) and are isomers, but not stereoisomers, mean they have differnt forms. Lutein levels are correlated with decreased risk of age-related macular degeneration.28 Carotenoids are tissue-specific antioxidants. For example, beta-carotene tends to accumulate in the liver and kidneys, while lycopene favors blood. Lutein & zeaxanthin concentrate in the macula and retina.
Optim-Eyes™ Vision Support contains Astaxanthin
Is also a carotenoids of the xanthophyll group. Astaxanthin is a more powerful antioxidant than other carotenoids, up as much as 10 times more powerful. And it is not converted to Retinol (vitamin A) unlike other carotenoids, meaning that it stays available in its natural form. Astaxanthin comes from microalgae and is one of the pigments that give Salmon there distinctive color.
Optim-Eyes™ Vision Support contains Beta Carotene (Vitamin A)
Beta carotene is a natural precursor to vitamin A, which is known to improve night vision. While it is possible to ingest too much vitamin A (since it is a fat-soluble vitamin and consequently accumulates in the body), beta carotene is water soluble and the body free converts it to vitamin A when the latter is needed. Therefore supplementing with beta carotene assures adequate levels of vitamin A are available to the body without risking ingesting too much vitamin A directly.
Optim-Eyes™ Vision Support contains N-Acetyl-Cysteine
Supplementation with N-Acetyl-Cysteine ("NAC") has been shown to increase glutathione levels.16 Interestingly, glutathione supplementation itself does not seem to boost tissue levels of glutathione. The higher levels of glutathione from NAC supplemention is found in concentration in the lens of the eye. There it plays an important role in the health of the lens (particularly in an antioxidant function). Glutathione levels are depleted in nearly all forms of cataracts.16 Glutathione works in conjunction with ascorbic acid (vitamin C, see above) as a free radical scavenger.16
Optim-Eyes™ Vision Support contains Bilbery Extract
Bilberry extract (also known as European blueberry) is perhaps the single best source of the blue plant pigments known as anthocyanidins. Bilberry seems to target the eye. The anthocyanidins in bilberry decrease vascular permeability.5,7,13,17 How this works is not quite understood yet, but it seems that bilberry anthocyanidins interact with blood vessel collagen in such a way as to slow down enzymatic attack of the blood vessel wall.17 This may prevent leakage of capillaries, decreasing ocular pressure and relieving painful edemas. Its high levels of tannic acid, cinnamic acids, flavonols, anthocyanidins, and isoflavones make it highly beneficial to the eye. Positive results have been noted in studies examining the effect of bilberry in pigmentary retinitis, diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy, retinal inflammation, macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma, cataract and night vision in normal subjects.2,3,8,11 The anthocyanidins in bilberry, which have the ability to protect and regenerate retinal purple (rhodopsin)3 are the primary agents responsible for its ability to help the eyes. At least one study we know of suggests additional benefits to the eye by adding vitamin E,2 which you will recall is included in Optim-Eyes. Bilberry extracts have been prescribed for over half a century in France for diabetic retinopathy.16
Optim-Eyes™ Vision Support contains Zinc
Zinc deficiencies can contribute to increased Rapid Dark Adaptation Test values. As adults age, they become particularly susceptible to zinc deficiencies, which can lead to poor night vision.
Optim-Eyes™ Vision Support contains Copper
Because zinc competes with copper for absorption through the intestines, zinc may precipitate a copper deficiency when supplemented regularly. Therefore it is wise to add copper when taking zinc regularly. (And since we are wise, we put copper in Optim-Eyes since it has zinc.)
Optim-Eyes™ Vision Support contains Ginkgo Biloba
The positive effects of the botanical ginkgo biloba on the peripheral arteries is now famous. Ginkgo biloba has been demonstrated halt the loss of vision in people with macular degeneration by increasing circulation in peripheral arteries.20,27,31 Ginkgo Biloba extract standardized to 24% ginkgo flavonglycosides and 6% terpene lactones is used, as this is the "gold standard" for ginkgo biloba.
